The health board’s pathology department is the FIRST in Wales, SECOND in the UK and THIRD in the World to attain accreditation to ISO 15189:2012.
The Certificate of Accreditation to ISO 15189:2012 was received by the Pathology directorate on May 10 2016. It covers the departments of clinical chemistry, haematology and transfusion, cellular pathology, immunology and microbiology.
Lord Lindsay, UKAS chairman visited the health board on November 1st to celebrate the department’s accreditation and took the opportunity to tour the facilities and to also chat to staff.
Prior to the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the accreditation, Lord Lindsay said: “I have been so impressed this morning.
“I was impressed as soon as I heard about the accreditation.
“ISO 15189 is a national and international standard. It sets the standard for medical and clinical competence in medical laboratories. It takes a huge amount of work and dedication from staff to attain this accreditation.
“I think this is one of the most impressive labs I have ever seen. It has been a very uplifting process.
“We are proud on your behalf.”
Esther Youd, clinical director for Pathology said: “Usually, each department within Pathology would seek its own accreditation one at a time. Instead, we took the bold step of applying for accreditation in all our departments at the same time.
“It’s incredible to think that not only are we the first in Wales to receive this accreditation, but we are the second in the UK and only the third in the world!
“This accreditation is official recognition of the outstanding quality ethos of the Pathology directorate; quality of results, quality of management and quality of staff.”
