Maria has worked in the NHS for more than 40 years both as a nurse as well as the Executive Director of Nursing for the former Merthyr Local Health Board. She will replace Professor Donna Mead who has served her full eight-year term as an independent member of the Board, including three years as Vice Chair.
An active member of the local community Maria is a Trustee of Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil, Safer Merthyr Tydfil, St David Community Hall, and Cancer Aid Merthyr Tydfil. She has also served as an Independent member of Cwm Taf UHB for the past four years and chairs the Quality and Patient Safety Committee.
“I am delighted about my appointment and look forward to working in the new role as Vice Chair from January,” said Maria. “My experience across the organisation and in Primary Community and Mental Health Services will put me in good stead and I look forward to working very closely with the Chair, Chief Executive and the Executive team to continue to provide safe effective care to the population of our community who deserve only the best healthcare services.”
Chair of Cwm Taf UHB Professor Marcus Longley said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Cabinet Secretary has appointed Maria to this key position in the University Health Board. Her expertise and life-long dedication to the excellence of health services for our population provide a brilliant foundation for her new role, and I very much look forward to working with her
“She has big shoes to fill, of course! Donna Mead has been a superb Vice Chair, and has made a huge contribution to all aspects of our work, and particularly in mental health and primary and community care, and as Champion for Veterans. We all wish her continuing success in the various other interests that she intends to pursue.”
