Dr Sri Velandy, consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist has been shortlisted in this year’s Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) Awards, in the category Psychiatrist of the Year.

Dr Velandy joined the health board in October 2014 and looks after patients in Merthyr and the upper Cynon valleys.  On hearing of her success Sri said: “I was really surprised that I had been shortlisted.

“The fact that the team nominated me was incredible because I do not feel I do anything different to any of my colleagues.

“It was very kind of them.”

Specialty doctor, Charlotte Davey, who nominated Dr Velandy for the award said: “Dr Velandy is the most supportive, knowledgeable and clinically excellent consultant I have ever worked for.

“I felt compelled to have this level of dedication, well beyond what was required, recognised and so I contacted the Royal College of Psychiatry to ask whether any such recognition was possible.

“Fortuitously, I had phoned on the last day for entry nominations for the Royal College of Psychiatrist Awards and set about making my nomination.

“When I informed Sri of my intentions, she was modest as ever, unable to see that the work she does goes above and beyond what’s expected.

“She brings a passion, enthusiasm and extensive evidence based knowledge to the team. Her excellent clinical practice and work ethic is infectious across the team which ultimately benefits our  patients.”

Dr Velandy’s family were delighted to hear about her nomination.  Sri said: “My mother was very tearful and full of praise but mother’s can be biased.”

Paying tribute to her team, Dr Velandy said: “My colleagues are amazing.

“We all pull together no matter what challenges we face.”

The winner will be announced at an Awards Ceremony which will take place on November 8th at the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London.

We wish Dr Velandy the very best of luck.
