The team on the older person’s mental health ward at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital have set up a hair and beauty salon to improve patients’ experience during their stay in hospital.
The salon, which is designed to give the ward more a home from home feel, provides the opportunity for patients to have their hair cut or styled and have their nails painted thanks to the support of local specialists.
Staff have also worked hard to create a beach scene in the garden next to the ward to help patients relax outside.
The development of the salon and the beach follow the success of the Royal Tavern, a pop-up pub which is fully kitted out with a bar, a television, pub games, books, a radio and tables and chairs so patients can enjoy their lunch or relatives can use it as a space that may help conversations and memories be more easily recalled.
By creating a community feel on the ward, the team hope to improve the experience of their patients, who are often in hospital for several weeks.
Ward Manager Sian Rees said: “We’re really pleased with the success of these initiatives and it’s great to see people enjoying the facilities. The Royal Tavern has been a hit with patients, families and staff and we think the salon and the beach will be too.
“It’s so important to us that we create a community feel here and these kinds of improvements have really helped our patients to feel less like they are staying on a hospital ward.”
Ward Manager Caroline Humphreys said: “We know that hospital stays can be difficult for patients and their families, so we really wanted to do all we can to make people feel as close to home as possible while they are here. Simple things such as having a pub lunch or getting your hair and nails done can make a big difference. The team have put a lot of work into making these initiatives a success and we’re very pleased by the feedback we have received so far.”
Julie Denley, Assistant Director of Mental Health, said: “Patients in our older adults mental health ward can often be in hospital for long periods of time and we want to do everything we can to make them feel at ease and interested in their surroundings. It’s wonderful to see the team build on the success of the Royal Tavern with the salon and the beach and see the difference it is making to our patients and their families.”
